Ah yes, the most important part of infectious disease modelling *checks notes* the opinions of a cloud computing expert on how neat the code ispic.twitter.com/XxYHjzb12H

"We'd never use this in our industry, it'd get you fired" "Right, but does it work?" "Oh I didn't check that, I have no idea where to start with infectious diseases, I just like pretty code"

I'm not sure if you have programming experience, but these things do matter. It's very difficult to debug or error check poorly written code. That doesn't me the model isn't any good, it's just harder to evaluate.

I'm sure debugging was top of the list of important things to consider when assembling a model to predict COVID-19 cases within a couple of weeks

Having seen code development in academia and in industry, he would have gotten a team of 5 ppl and about 3x the salary to write something of a similar complexity. Oh, and a supervision from someone who knows how to write code.

Pretty much. The academic probably had himself and a couple of PhD students, maybe a post-doc who'd offered their time for free

I agree that having tidy code probably wasn’t top of the list, but coding in a way which makes reproducibility/replicability easier is an important part of science, especially if big decisions are going to be made on the back of the science, no? Bad code is bad science.

Scientists and engineers generally write bad code. They aren't trained, mentored and experienced in code maintainability. Bioinformatics packages they share publicly seem to be v dodgy, from my wife's experiences.

Bit like checking the doctor's handwriting for a prescription note - more important is the actual model and math they used, SIR or SEIR, stochastic calculus, and so on...

Having said that, if the software program does not give you consistent and reproducible results, then it's not credible
