This is arguably the most arrogant and tone-deaf thing I've seen @VPrasadMDMPH say, which is quite a feat
Perhaps you can tell the 25,000 dead in NYC that an academic spat is worse than their disease. I'm sure they'll be thrilled to hear ithttps://twitter.com/VPrasadMDMPH/status/1261429662657343491 …

Does saying "people will die" or "people have died" put all further discussion out of bounds?

Of course not. It merely puts into context a few people being mean to John Ioannidis online

Surely you know the points were much bigger than that. Particularly imo wrt the dumpster fire damage accruing from our partisanship as blood sport. As far as Ioannidis, my motto is play the ball and not the man.

"The dumpster fire damage accruing from our partisanship as blood sport." It's gonna be a huge mistake if this seeps into science.

I think it's weirdly naive to assume that evidence isn't impacted by political decisions, and the idea that science is somehow entirely apolitical is clearly incorrect. Just look at gun research in the US

Depends on if and where you want to try and draw a line, I suppose.

Let me put it this way - the furore about the Santa Clara study is largely because it IS political. The entire point is to drive a specific set of policies, from the writing to the continued insistence by the authors that their study means lockdowns are not a good idea

Debates & discussions should be had. Is anyone really confident they know everything? I can't imagine being that confident in this unprecedented space. And I read a ton and listen to equivalent number of podcasts. Uncertain is my strongest certainty.

Debates and discussions are wonderful, but people producing bad science to further political aims are not. Ioannidis is a perfect example, having said with cheerful certainty many times that COVID-19 is "common and mild" It is hardly surprising that people are a touch upset
