I don't want to be in the position of defending Ebright, but you cut the part about my comments out the story. No, the tone was thus because the whole thing was clearly a shit-show all around. We didn't know the full backstory. Though there were plenty of clues.pic.twitter.com/38Lgj10Gfa

Our article was not defending Ioannidis' research or position, we argue that academics should not engage in bullying, name calling, & ad hominem attacks by the hundreds, even if they do not like the ideas/ work (even wrong ones) of other academics Is that really controversial?

I'm not sure it's worth re-litigating all of that, but it does seem to me that when the authors ignore peer commentary and take to the Ingraham Angle to promote their problematic work, the calculus of decorum shifts somewhat.

Our issue is that if academic disagreement gets so personal and so political, we are doomed. It's worse than Covid. Stanford authors deserve to have their study gutted, but not the personal attacks. That is a slippery slope even if they go on bad TV shows.

Academic preprint publication followed by media interviews prior to review is unscientific behavior, that should not be protected as outlined in your Stat piece. Failing to distinguish between that behavior and the conduct of science was an error in your Stat piece, in my view.

Interesting thought. There are many Press interviews being given re preprints or no-prints in face of pandemic, which is not normal times for anyone. Not sure how/why his interviews appearances are different from many others in that regard. Being right or wrong is another matter.

I have not been able to understand claims re how precise past infection rate in Santa Clara (1 vs 3%) would have affected our understanding of the pandemic or have caused harm to anyone. Of course, important to avoid errors, as JI has pointed out for years. Can’t avoid that.

I'm kind of amazed to hear you say this. Neeleman and many others wanted to argue for a lower IFR, so as to support the claim that lockdowns should be lifted immediately. If seroprevalence is higher than believed, that forms the denominator in IFR and thus IFR drops.

I fully understand the effect of bigger denominator on IFR. As a non epidemiologist, I wouldn’t have thought that variation in that range in one study would cause anyone to alter policy recommendations. So surprised at intensity of reaction re impact. Fine to react to errors.

The study is one of the most read pieces of research in the last decade. It has directly influenced policy in the US and across the world, giving opponents of COVID-19 measures enormous ammunition to oppose policy And it's quite clearly bad science
