The original implication was that a long, hot summer would protect against coronaviruses. Quite clearly, if general sun exposure isn't well correlated with vitamin D, that claim becomes even more unlikely!

Sun exposure is correlated with vitamin d, but if people stay indoors during the hottest part of the day (as is more common in Italy) they'll be deficient, in the UK we go out in the midday sun at the first opportunity

I grew up in the UK and I don't think that's true at all. But, regardless, the point still stands - if BEHAVIOUR is the defining factor behind vitamin D status, then summer itself is not actually causing anything
