I decided to delve into the "Vitamin D can cure COVID-19" articles to see what the fuss is about and this is WILD Blog forthcoming, but holy shit this is the worst argument I've seen in a very long timepic.twitter.com/UUIZzPtUTN

The basic story - two studies correlated PAST measurements of Vitamin D levels with CURRENT COVID-19 deaths and concluded that it might be implicated This is such staggering nonsense I don't know where to start...

Did people who died from the disease actually HAVE low Vit D levels? Was this the case BEFORE the disease onset? What confounding factors might be at play? We have NO IDEA!!! Epidemiological nonsense

And yet, hundreds of articles and I've already been told by several people that they're taking supplemental Vit D because of it

There's some evidence from studies of Vit D being useful for OTHER respiratory infection, but many of these studies looked at people with asthma and it's hard to know if this would transfer to infection with COVID-19

It's also worth noting that there doesn't seem to be any good evidence of Vitamin D protecting against DEATH from infection, which is really what we care about

If you live in southern New Zealand, Chile, or Argentina, this is the season to take vitamin D supplements... but not for any COVID-related reason!

Addressing #vitaminD deficiency regardless of CV19 - yes - I agree. But I really do think there is more than mere correlation here. There appears to be causation. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GCSXNGc7pfs&t=873s …pic.twitter.com/AkiVMATJwy

As if you lose all your vitamin D after a month in quarantine where you’re still free to go outside as much as you want 🤔🤔🤔

Agreed it's no more than a hypothesis to test. Vit D deficiency has been implicated in several immunological disorders including ARDS so there may be a mechanistic relevance to COVID-19. Making sure of Vit D levels (outdoor exercise) isn't unreasonable.https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25903964

Oh yeh that was yet another awful piece of research. They found the vaguest of correlations between country-level Vit D status and COVID mortality, but it's essentially meaningless!
