This is not unexpected, but I really hoped that at least the threat of being held indefinitely on a poorly-resourced boat would deter people from cruises for a while yet

Haven't read but the tittle. Yet I believe this may be like relative and absolute risk. 600% from what? Nothing? Maybe they sold 1 ticket before and now six.
-
They report a 600% increase in day-to-day sales and a 200% increase year-on-year Granted, daily sales metrics aren't a perfect measure, but it's pretty concerning that they're selling triple the number of tickets over 3 days as the same time last year!

I’ve never been tempted to go in a cruise — ship of fools and all that — but now I’m utterly baffled that anybody would want to.

“bookings skyrocketed 600% over 3 days after the announcement. That was in comparison to the 3 days prior to the announcement.” Uh I’m guessing bookings were pretty low to start with
-
Also, are these bookings for the day they reopen or are people rescheduling stuff for the far future? And are they brand new bookings or do people have use-it-or-lose-it vouchers from previous cancellations?

I canceled my July cruise 2 weeks ago. I ate the $300 fee. No way in hell I will board a cruise ship for at least two years. Maybe never.

I don’t know where they plan to cruise but suspect many places/countries will not be allowing cruise ships for some time…..

I never understood the appeal of cruises before COVID so this is completely unfathomable.
