I've seen the claim that, even if 20-30% of the population doesn't reach the herd immunity threshold, it's still a good thing to aim for terms of pandemic protection I'm not convinced

R0 of COVID-19 is ~3. If we have 20-30% of the population immune to the disease, that number drops to ~2.1-2.4 Not enough to stop or even drastically slow down an outbreak

Conversely, 20-30% of the population being infected implies somewhere between 0.04-0.3% of the total population dying That's quite a staggering cost for potentially very little benefit
