Not a new argument but since CDC lags reporting deaths by 8 weeks, not a timely metric nationwide. Excess deaths in Massachusetts says nothing about excess deaths in South Dakota.

Is the proposal to use CDC data, though? The charts shows data from the state authorities in MA. Presumably CDC lag is due to time taken to aggregate and check the data from the states; there doesn't seem to be a reason why a governor would go to the CDC for local info.
