I'm doing a lot of proof reading lately. A lot of different articles from a lot of different people. And some excellent writers. Here are some rules I'd like to propose: 1) new writers should never use the words "thus" & "whereby" - save those for when you have had some practice.

2) the words "utilise" and "irregardless" should be banned. 3) avoid letting those zombies do your science (passive voice is confusing). 4) 9/10 times, a conjunction at the start of the sentence can be deleted outright without losing any meaning What are your best writing tips?

Simplify simplify simplify. "Whilst" sounds great in a speech by a crusty old professor, but reads terribly. Think of the language that most bores you to hear and write the opposite of that
