1/5 Now that we're weeks into lockdowns, people are discussion 'eliminating' #COVID19 Can we eliminate the disease? It's hard to say, but many places in the world offer us some interesting evidence

2/5 In this context, 'elimination' is a specific term. It doesn't mean getting rid of something completely, it means having no endemic transmission of the disease (i.e. all cases of COVID-19 are imported)pic.twitter.com/tf9btoR73A

3/5 New Zealand and other countries have announced this as the goal of their policies, which is certainly laudable NZ may even have achieved the goal (although too early to know yet for certain)pic.twitter.com/O18hkCMugz

4/5 On the other hand, we have countries like China and South Korea, who even after months of incredibly hard work haven't managed to stop local transmission entirely

5/5 I am personally a bit skeptical that elimination of #COVID19 is realistic, but there is certainly encouraging evidence out there that in some places it could happen

Im in NZ at the moment and it is looking like they have done it. They’ve been testing randomly for about 10 days with zero positives. They are doing it strategically by area and race/ethnicity. Random shoppers at supermarket, in essential factories etc.

The some regions haven’t had a new case in 2 1/2 weeks. But agree need a bit more to say with 100% conviction nothing at all is floating around.

More importantly, what is our alternative to an elimination strategy? Do we pop in and out of isolation as the virus flares up again and again for at least 18 months before a vaccine is available?
