A horrifying fact - unless trends drastically change, by the end of May the US will have had more deaths from COVID-19 than China has had caseshttps://twitter.com/cmyeaton/status/1256983962704101378 …

      Health Nerd added,

In April an average of ~2,000 people died of coronavirus in the US each day. That is more than daily average from cancer or heart disease. I fear there is growing complacency that this level of loss is a new normal. Are we really ready to add a new leading cause of death? 1/

Loads of replies telling me that China is obviously lying about their numbers, which is dumb because a) no incentive b) why would the US data be more trustworthy?

This is true for literally every government of every country, one-party or not. The current US administration is notorious for lying and/or spinning figures to change the narrative

There’s definitely an incentive: to project competence and also deflect blame (we controlled our outbreak, why couldn’t you?). That others have the same incentive doesn’t mean China doesn’t have it. The question is, are they lying or not, and I don’t know the answer to that.

The real question is why does this even matter? Doesn’t make the number of deaths any smaller

It will be very interesting to see how the numbers from various countries converge, including relative severity rates. I don't think viewing the US as a whole will provide good data; it will have to be broken down by state because of the wide range of responses.
