So today the former dean of Harvard Medical School wrote an OpEd in a leading health publication about I'm "silencing" an endowed chair at Stanford Medical School by opining on twitter that his latest work is bullshit. How's your day going?

Dude, lots of folks said things like: * He has blood on his hands * Papers have less than zero value * He should apologize for his mistakes He was clearly treated as a pariah. And now you are accusing those who say that was unfair of tone policing! That's rich!

His numbers aren't valueless, of course, but his opinions are wildly out of sync with the evidence and appear to be contrarianism for the sake of clicks. They have, by all accounts, driven policy across the US. That's a real problem imo

And quite frankly, the fact that the man has been at the forefront of scientific critique for more than a decade and then put his name on research that makes incredibly inappropriate inferences is worth a pointed remark or two I think

I am cool with pointed remarks: "Man that paper stinks bad. Can't believe John put his name on it." People have characterized him as a murderer, demanded his entire team be sacked, a liar with no redeeming value, etc.

I haven't seen any such remarks tbh. On the other hand, seen a lot of people pointing out the, uh, questionable position of defending scientific rigor for decades and then deciding all of that was unimportant during a crisis

They are out there, including from some very prominent people.

I think we can all agree that absurd threats are unacceptable. I think we can also agree that arguing that an internationally famous tenured professor who has enormous political and media clout is being "silenced" comes across as arrogant twaddle of the worst kind
