Isn't 80% the lower end of the range of herd immunity thresholds? Isn't it higher for more contagious diseases? Assuming the immunity even lasts long enough.

No, it all depends on protecting the most at risk. For people under 50, your aren’t going to see hundreds of thousands dead. Ny sending sick patients back to nursing homes is responsible for much.

Yes, people extrapolate deaths as if there's nothing we can do to protect known vulnerable groups. Same problem in the UK as in NY of discharging untested old people from hospitals into care homes.
