Another question for #epitwitter: I still struggle to get a handle on what the biggest issues are for nationwide testing right now. I know shortage is one. Who are some folks who can best speak to the *specific* challenges preventing wider scale, systematic testing?

Here's a strawman: 1. Shortage: reality in many places, still perception in others (so doctors hesitant to order) 2. Medical process/logic; if obvious symptoms, doctors don't believe treatment path/recommendations will change, so why test? ... 1/2

3. Inability for asymptomatic to get tested, incl. w/ direct exposure; most (/all?) still need doctor order w/ in-person or tele-consult 4. Concerns for high FN rates, from combo of NPS procedure & viral load kinetics 5. Backlogs: still days to get back from central labs 2/2

I'm confused. These aren't necessarily slam-dunks against nationwide testing, but they are certainly considerations that may make it difficult to pursue

We *should* have a nationwide testing program that covers anyone who wants a test and does statistically significant populations so we're not flying blind (both viral & serology). Absent a coherent program, the list is the set of things I've seen why it's not happening grassroots

Perhaps we should, but there are significant barriers to doing so. Most national programs in the US take years to set up. I don't think it's a straw man to point out that it's going to be an extremely hard thing to do

Maybe we're both confused over the term 'strawman', or at least my use of it. ;) I was attempting to answer "why isn't there more COVID-19 testing happening currently in the US?" The 1-5 list was what I've seen in the healthcare/testing industry, and have experienced directly.

@GidMK — I was also confused about calling those things strawmen because they sounded like *good* reasons/arguments!0 replies 0 retweets 1 likeThanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo
