That will take someone more expert than I. Intuitively I was expecting the word “symptomatic” where your first “contagious” is. But intuition has let me down before.
Not wrong AFAIK, although the R0 is based on more than just contagious period (i.e. mode of spread)
I was considering a different point, that a period of contagion without symptoms could increase R0...but now I am interested in the point raised here, that a longer latent period gives higher R0...and would like to know why. Isolation measures less effective etc?
R0 is a measure in a fully susceptible population - doesn't consider isolation measures or immunity
OK. Thanks. Why does longer latent period increase the R0 then?
Longer contagious period is the concern - the longer someone is contagious, particularly if unaware they are infected, the more people they are likely to infect
Yes. But the statement made is that longer Latent period leads to longer R0.
I have the same question—why would the latent period influence R0? (I realize I wrote that, but I was communicating what the paper notes and don’t know the reasons.)
I believe it's because the longer the latency, the harder it is to find people who've been infected - much harder to know who gave who the disease
this idea lead to my thought above regarding isolation measures
