One of the things the whole #Masks debate has shown starkly is how little people want to engage with uncertainty It can't be "we don't really know if they help" Everyone feverishly wants a sure yes/no

The reality is that the evidence is hugely equivocal, and indicates at best a minimal benefit from masks But because there's some possibility, maybe wear a mask Not an answer most people want to hear

Your cloth mask ~may~ provide some protection for others from infection Your front door definitely will Stay at home, stay safe 👍

Oh, also, the other thing that's interesting to watch is everyone knowing for sure that ~they~ are an exception to the rule even though evidence shows they probably won't be

And if as a result of more evidence it later changes to there being a significant/no benefit to masks, people construe it as "You made a mistake with your earlier advice".

Better be overprepared in this case. Let's not use the fact that nobody was prepared , they dropped the ball and there were not enough masks around as a bias for us to declare "no or little benefit"

I don't think anyone's doing that. There are a number of RCTs and a fair bit of preclinical research behind the equivocation, it's not a sure thing in the general public by any means

People also don't like to learn all the proper processes that go along with PPE use, and without them you might be creating a bigger risk for yourself by thinking you're protected. For example, how many new mask users know how to properly don and doff with hand hygiene?

Totally agree. Communicating uncertainty is a corner stone of pandemic communication. I also feel optics make believe believe they are doing something positive.

Your continual anti mask retric is dull and possibley dangerous in not stopping asymptomatic spreaders. Anything that helps is better than nothing.
