The reality is that the evidence is hugely equivocal, and indicates at best a minimal benefit from masks But because there's some possibility, maybe wear a mask Not an answer most people want to hear

Your cloth mask ~may~ provide some protection for others from infection Your front door definitely will Stay at home, stay safe

Oh, also, the other thing that's interesting to watch is everyone knowing for sure that ~they~ are an exception to the rule even though evidence shows they probably won't be

People want certainty - that's why religion is so popular Scientists are trained to be comfortable with uncertainty. I always wonder how we can get all humans to be comfortable with uncertainty

How about this: "We don't know if it's a yes or a no, but it's pretty clear they don't really make it worse." I mean yes, incorrect handling etc., but at that point, you would've been exposed without a mask, too. So slap one on, and if it saves just one life, it's worth it.

(With the caveat that I'm talking about cloth & at best surgical masks, because... our providers need the good stuff more than we do)

I agree with your take. I disagree with some that only point out what could go wrong (false sense of security, wearing it wrong, etc.). There needs to be proper and nuanced communication on this that describes risk reduction measures and how they should all be used together.

I feel like this whole phenomenon of non-public health folks modeling the pandemic is about how terrified people are about engaging with uncertainty. "If I fit a slope to it, if I find the right equation, then I'll have it under control, then I'll KNOW." Same with masks..
