I think this was always the case with masks, right? Even with shitty masks, with appropriate use, there is a small but likely benefit. The conversation about discouraging masks is more to divert to HCW which confers greatest advantage to community.

It's not that likely, that's the problem. It ~might~ help, but the indication is that they probably don't do much for aerosols which are the main reason to wear masks,

Question: most of the comments I see from gov sources say it doesn’t offer much protection for the wearer. But they advise for infected to stop spread. I’ve heard that’s it’s best to act as though you’re infected to stop any potential spread. So why not recommend masks to all?

#Birx's take on this- people would have a false sense of security if the recommendation of masks were made stronger. After all, it does not protect the fact and I wonder if people feel emboldened to interact, equiped with a mask. -
