It doesn’t seem from that report that there’s much good evidence either way. To me, its virulence implies airborne transmission and I wonder if the focus on hand washing has made things worse by giving people a false sense of security.

Nah, airborne transmission and infectiousness don't go hand in hand. It's more complex than that. Also, fomites are usually the biggest worry even with some airborne infections (i.e. measles)
