Everyone's confused about masks and #COVID19, so I wrote a lot of words on all the evidence and what it means for the general public in these troubled times: You Still Probably Don’t Need A Mask For COVID-19https://link.medium.com/l7ACYQcLj5

I don't understand the section "Masks Probably Don’t Prevent Infections In Community Settings". If the point of masks is to prevent you from infecting other people, how would monitoring the person who wore the mask allow for the above conclusion?

This is part of the confusion I think. That's why I had point 3 first - there's not really much evidence about you wearing a mask to protect others, but there's quite a bit of evidence around wearing a mask to protect yourself

I see. Then how do we arrive to the conclusion that "you probably don't need a mask for covid"? Shouldn't it read "No one knows if masks protect communities from Covid, although in theory they could?"

I tried to explain that with the rest of the piece. YOU probably don't need one, there may be a benefit if everyone wore one although this isn't certain, however given that potential benefit is likely to be small and masks are in short supply you probably don't need one yourself

Although I usually agree with you, I don't get the logic in this case. "No data(?)" isn't the same as "the benefit is likely to be small", and the push is about making #Masks4All for all, including homemade masks that don't put a strain on supplies.

I actually talk a bit about homemade masks as well - there's some evidence that fabric masks can increase the risk of infection which makes them also a problem

Tagging @zeynep who did an awesome job at summarizing the evidence.

How is that possible? Everything that the mask catches would have been inhaled if it wasn't for the mask. That makes no sense.

Read the study he mentions. If the mask doesn't filter properly (and/or is damp) then you're still breathing in those particles. Then you'd need to not touch it unless removing and clean it properly every single time you use it for full protection. Lots of room for error.

The study you refer to compared cloth masks to a control group that to a large extent was wearing mechanical masks, hence, I don't find it justified to conclude that cloth masks increased the risk compared to no mask. Do you know of other studies indicating harm of cloth masks?
