"Masks stop respiratory droplets sometimes!" is a ridiculous exercise in surrogate outcomes We KNOW that masks are unlikely to prevent community acquired infections. THAT'S what we care about, not some statistics on particulate movement #COVID19

Because people get mad about anything mask-related, some links to read before you righteously claim that they MUST work https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/eid/article/15/2/08-1167_article …https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25858901

AT BEST we can say that there's very low quality evidence that highly adherent mask use may modestly reduce the likelihood of infection for people wearing them, although this has not been demonstrated in the majority of trials

"The contrast between face mask use as hygienic practice (ie, in many Asian countries) or as something only people who are unwell do (ie, in European and North American countries) has induced stigmatisation and racial aggravations, for which further public education is needed."

A thread on why wearing a face mask can save lives. Masks must be prioritised for healthcare workers, so use them rationally. Wear a mask when go out. You don’t have to be sick to do that. Don’t shun people who do wear them. #covid19 By @zeynep (NYT-1/14) https://nyti.ms/2x2naQu

Studies typically look only at outcomes of sick/not sick. Another outcome of relevance for covid19 is disease severity. Masks could potentially reduce disease severity by reducing the size of initial (and any subsequent early) inocula. This possibility should not be dismissed.

Agree, there is increasing evidence that intensity of exposure is a determinant of COVID-19 severity, as also observed for measles, chickenpox, polio and pertussis. I am a newcomer with regards to masks - but currently contemplating their usefulness when COVID-19 hits Africa. I communicated with the author of the papers you reference, Dr. MacIntyre, and she referred me to her blog: https://iser.med.unsw.edu.au/blog/impact-ppe-shortages-health-workers-during-covid19-pandemic …

Dr. MacIntyre states that “If there is nothing else, OF COURSE you should use whatever (mask) you can get or make your own. The physical barrier may afford some protection.”

Oh I don't think there's any question about mask use for healthcare workers. Not the same as community tho, very different populations/situations

Results in the Czech Republic speak for themselves 13 deaths in 10.65M population That would translate into 81 deaths for the whole of the UK #Masks4All

Australia has a lower death rate per population, but it's a meaningless measure tbh
