There's emerging evidence from Wuhan and South Korea that the death rate may be significantly lower (although still high), probably somewhere around 0.5% with up to 60% almost totally asymptomatic

It explains a lot imo. Highly symptomatic cases more likely to be identified and quarantined, this would explain the very rapid spread
