I also know people who turn to that because modern medicine has a lot of very pretentious practitioners who play down the symptoms of women and black people, while "alternative" practicionners' placebo effect relies on getting people's trust and listening.
Personally I've never been able to get a doctor to believe any symptoms I ever had, including when my arm was broken (X rays showed I was right), when I almost died of sepsis, etc. The attitude of MDs push vulnerable people right into "alternative medicine" offices.
