Although there is a good counter-argument I'm aware of that says that if you make things free for everyone, including rich people, the system benefits because rich people will defend/invest in it. I'm not sure socially what would be the best solution tbh

We had a local community a few years ago (sorry, blanking on which city) pilot free public transportation (here, bus is only option for public transpo, no rail system). It went very well, with increased usage but decreased traffic/violations/accidents, and other benefits.
