At least public transit should be cheaper than owning a car yourself and commuting to work daily. Sadly not always the case at least in germany

In my city, it's free for the disabled and elderly below a certain economic threshold. One needs to apply for it, naturally.

Is there data on this? Wouldn’t making it free save money on ticketing staff and infrastructure and policing compliance?

Plus, any subsidy is likely to miss at least some people or add time consuming barriers. And the bus loads so fast when the machine is broken!
