"Telling people not to worry about an emerging infectious disease because it isn’t a significant risk here and now is foolish" http://psandman.com/articles/Corona1.htm …

Urging caution is a very reasonable position imo, because as we can see even now the responses to the coronavirus are often disproportionate, damaging, and potentially ineffective when people panic (i.e. travel bans)
-
The fact that the virus is out there has me concerned and interested. That many health/science professionals are denouncing travel restrictions has me confused (and somewhat alarmed). The arguments seem to be 1) that it’ll hurt the economy and 2) it won’t work 1/2

Yes, but it doesn’t stop people from panicking.

Yes, that's why I added this. "Don't panic" is obviously glib, I think the responses from the WHO are probably the best example of reasonable caution at the momenthttps://twitter.com/GidMK/status/1224467237836181504?s=20 …

I think that some of the tone policing has crossed into conflating panic with alarm (not implying that that's what you are doing, just noting I've seen a good amount). People should be alarmed. They should be alert, cautious, and paying attention IMO.

Sure, but people hear "No need to panic" and read it as "No cause for concern."

giving people vague, purposely benign info now will aggravate panic later (as Mr. Sandman points out) bc the public will feel the rug has been ripped out from under them. And they will distrust the medical agencies that will need authority and credibility if the worse happens
