It may be fine for epidemiologists but BMI is a pretty crap determinant of body fat mass and distribution.

Extremes of BMI are certainly helpful in assessing risk. Would you argue a BMI of 40 or greater is fine? It helps us stratify some risk in pregnancy and preoperatively. It’s a measure that does have some use - at least I can speak for OB/GYN.
