Statements like this are where I part ways with the whole HAES movement BMI is a pretty good predictor of poor health, which is an extremely well-verified fact Weight stigma is awful (from personal experience) but BMI is certainly not its causehttps://twitter.com/theintuitive_rd/status/1223253206848999425 …

I used to think BMI was simply a poor measure of health... But no — BMI and everything it stands for is a *DETRIMENT* to health and a key player in the RAMPANT weight stigma that infects our medical system.

It's certainly true that there are people who are "fat but fit", but I can attest from personal experience that it is an extremely hard thing to do BMI is, for most people, a reasonable measure with which to judge future risk of poor health

Perfect time for me to bring up the fact that NIH continues to claim, incorrectly, that BMI is “a measure of body fat”. BMI may have its uses but that claim, at least at the individual level, really must go...

Not all have HAES ❤️ at higher BMIs but it’s a good base to be BODY POSITIVE without an over evaluation of weight and shape. BMI of >30 ➕ >waist 🚺 80cm/ 🚹 94cm =⬆️Risk of T2diabetes, heart disease and stroke. Self acceptance ➕ compassion bring change ❤️

And on the inverse, fitness-minded people that scoff at BMI because they've got an overabundance of muscle don't understand that being overweight is a risk factor no matter what kind of weight it is. I was in that world for awhile.

Even tall and muscular male athletes are around 275 lbs, like say Brock Lesnar or Tyson Fury. If you weigh more than them and don't look/perform like them, chances are you're BMI is definitely a red flag and not "bigotry"

I agree that people who have never been obese should consider being less vociferous about this subject.
