Unusual that the diaspora of martial arts, which seems like a perfect target for accusations of cultural appropriation, has almost entirely avoided that debate. Am I wrong? If not, why not? What's unique about judo/karate/Thai-kickboxing/jujutsu/etc.?

Perhaps the difficulty? It is very easy to create a culturally appropriative faux-Asian restaurant, somewhat more difficult to set up a martial arts studio in the same way

Good point, not sure I meant "difficulty" per se. More about the relative popularity of the activities perhaps?
