Viruses are so small that special ceramic filters are used in virology labs. I can't imagine that ordinary face masks could stop a virus.

They can indeed, depends on the mode of transmission. Many viral infections are droplet-borne, which means they infect people through droplets in sneezes/coughs. If you prevent the droplets from moving through the air, the risk reduces drastically
