Unusual that the diaspora of martial arts, which seems like a perfect target for accusations of cultural appropriation, has almost entirely avoided that debate. Am I wrong? If not, why not? What's unique about judo/karate/Thai-kickboxing/jujutsu/etc.?

I've heard enthusiasts say it is very easy to set up a gratuitous studio, and in fact that's what most of those karate mills are.

Right, and there's the question of whether the problem with cultural appropriation is mediocrity...obviously lots of "authentic" mediocre restaurants—and terrific "inauthentic" restaurants.

But that assumes that “Asian food” is unchanged. That unlike our food, which changes all the time, the food of every other culture can only be made however some grandma in a tiny village did 100 years ago. Which is nonsense for many reasons.
