We’ve had some problems in the U.K. of screening for very specific things in specific populations (v tiny numbers) and not having the resource to treat afterwards when positives arise. Absolute nightmare.

Why? Is it the risk/reward of treating something minor? The stress of a positive diagnosis?

It's explained in the article. Some cancers are so slow growing they will never cause any problems. So, the surgery, chemo, radiation is for nothing

Is it because of the current state of science that can’t treat a lot of disease being diagnosed or for other reasons?

Hopefully, future genetic testing will help with predictive models but cost will be an issue. In the meantime, I volunteer not to get a colonoscopy lol!
