"They made things better in the old days" is my favorite example of survivorship bias All of the old things you see are well made BECAUSE THE THINGS THAT WEREN'T BROKE ALREADY 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯

I disagree on this one. Products were made to last and cost was worthwhile to consumers. Better quality materials that justified cost and longevity. Things were made to be able to get fixed with replaceable parts and less waste because of it. The consumer mentality was different

You seem to like survivorship bias. Would you like to lead the @Catalogofbias entry on this?

I’m in the appliance industry and hear this all the time. For every person’s grandmother still using a 30 year old refrigerator, there were thousands hauled away and taken to the dump.

Same goes to "music was better in the old days" when somebody hears today the songs that made the cut back then...

The Amish are still building things the old way; so we have a modern comparison to Ikea and the like.

Many things were not better in the old days, of course, but some were definitely better. If you ever examine the lumber on an old house you’ll note it was much better. 2 by 4s were 2”x4”, etc. But the insulation (if any) was pathetic.
