Bit of a chicken and egg tho, diabetes impacts LDL so it's hard to know what's causing the increased risk. From my understanding, it's a very complex interrelationship with diabetes and cholesterol
"The extent to which levels of LDL cholesterol influence diabetes risk may depend on the physiological mechanism that contributes to differences in lipid levels." This repeats the original point - mechanism of LDL change determines risk, not level. 1/2https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/27701660?dopt=Abstract …
This can also be true of CVD risk - there are lipase alleles that raise LDL because they lower TGs, and these alleles are associated with lower CVD risk.
