Today, they're forgotten while another lab makes almost identical claims about a different new treatment

Oh, I see now. I think these are apples and oranges - completely different scales - IMO nothing wrong at all with the basic research done by the Cardiff group and has way more chance of becoming something significant. It's just been overblown too early, in my opinion.

In this case, I think a wildly overblown press release is likely the culprit.
