(When I say "akin to schizophrenia" it's because the initial diagnosis of "autism" was basically psychiatrists saying "this problem looks like schizophrenia, but isn't")

I would argue the new criteria is so broad as to be nearly meaningless, and is a disservice to those on the truly debilitating end of the “spectrum”.

Nope, my son is on the milder end of the spectrum and it has still affected his functioning.

There was a family member who was described as “quirky” (now deceased, died in 80s a few years ago). Looking at that current criteria, family member may have been autistic. I know we can’t retroactively diagnosis someone. But I do believe autism was “always there”.
