Malariotherapy was very popular at the time, because the only other option for the treatment of syphilis (which was often fatal) was arsenic tablets that were only marginally safer than the disease

Also worth noting that, due to the research practices of the time, it's actually quite difficult to know if malariotherapy had any benefit at all The claimed cure rates were very impressive, but the trials were much less so!
