Public hospitals need to be publicly reporting increased smoke pollution admissions and there needs to regular reports tabled on pollution-related deaths

I agree in principle, but incredibly difficult in practice. Requires very complex analysis to separate out respiratory admissions that would've happened anyway from the ones that are potentially due to smoke/pollution

I'm also not sure it's an easy thing to report publicly in this way, because there'll always be a fairly wide margin of error in that sort of estimate

Thought it worth an update - asked a friend who works in the area, apparently respiratory admissions in NSW are basically flat so far. Doesn't mean smoke isn't causing issues, but from the raw figures there's no difference at all

Yep I'm hearing any 'spikes' aren't as bad as expected. And it always take quie a long time to get accurate data about enviro-related presentations.

Pretty much. It's really hard to distinguish environmental issues in the data, doctors can't just point to someone and say that they wouldn't have gotten sick without the smoke

Yes, exactly. The whole causation/correlation. But I also think we need to give the public a bit of credit. We can explain, for instance, if respiratory presentations up over a defined period and that it was not possible to directly link to bush fires.

That's true, but from what I've heard it's not unlikely that respiratory admissions will be down overall over this period - even though there's probably an increase due to the smoke. That's a pretty fine point to explain I reckon

Do they normally spike in summer anyway?

Nah it's usually winter - flu season. They're on the decline at the moment, nadir is usually around Jan/Feb
