Pretty much. It's really hard to distinguish environmental issues in the data, doctors can't just point to someone and say that they wouldn't have gotten sick without the smoke

Yes, exactly. The whole causation/correlation. But I also think we need to give the public a bit of credit. We can explain, for instance, if respiratory presentations up over a defined period and that it was not possible to directly link to bush fires.

That's true, but from what I've heard it's not unlikely that respiratory admissions will be down overall over this period - even though there's probably an increase due to the smoke. That's a pretty fine point to explain I reckon
