Actually the data is very robust on this. In the 1960s prior to vaccination:
~1 in 4 children who caught measles were hospitalized
~1 in 100 suffered lifelong complications

Hospitalization rates differ by country (the highest are for the US in that period) but the serious complication rates are remarkably steady
