Agreed, by most definitions doing classwork is not research. That being said, I find the replies getting mad that I'm implying that googling a question is not equivalent to studying it for years quite funny

I don't think it fits with the colloquialism of "consuming content", no. Usually a term that is specific to unreferenced internet pages

Well,
@WeDietitians put it more succinctly: If you didn't experience it yourself, it is - indeed - "consuming content." Those are the only 2 ways that we can "acquire" information about the world. An entire discipline (communication) is built on this concept.
