Ah the old "I checked with an expert" canard. Much like nutrition-chronic disease studies, for every expert in nutrition, there's an equal and opposite expert. Thread on the problems of expertise, because this (there's more upthread of tweet below, so read that too) 1/:https://twitter.com/GidMK/status/1203604334165909504 …

Yeh pretty much. I check with an expert any time I write a blog that's not specifically about study design/epi, for example

It's fascinating, because my initial tweet was prompted by vaccine denialism about Samoa, but LCHF people have all been jumping on to tell me that expertise is totally worthless Odd, that

It's not worthless. & I'm not sure my thread applies to anti-vaccine arguments (equal & opposite experts/science? I don't think so). I was more interested in the "Check with an expert" remark. My point : You'll get a different response depending on what expert you check with.

Will you? For every issue? What if I wanted to know the nutritional recommendations for people with stage 5 CKD? Or total parenteral nutrition?

The topic of my threas was population level dietary recommendations. No, not for every issue, which is an excellent point. There *are* issues in nutrition where little or no disagreement exists. We should acknowledge both (see "find common ground").

So then why quote-tweet me saying that I like to ask experts when I write about a subject with which I am unfamiliar? If expertise is useful, then surely we can all agree asking an expert is a good idea

And I quote tweeted you because you used the phrase, "I check with an expert" so unproblematically. That's not a slight - just explaining why it caught my eye. My point being that "expertise" is problematic, most especially in nutrition.

Is it though? Or are there several key areas where experts disagree that are big news, while the vast majority of things are quietly agreed on?

I mean, if it's only 5 disagreements then surely asking an expert about anything except those 5 things is a great idea?https://twitter.com/ahhite/status/1204166858057879558?s=20 …

And the first two are fine, so really only 5. 😉

Also, I never said what I use experts for. Often it's to help with jargon and/or find studies. I think this argument ignores the depth of knowledge that makes up "expertise"

Which argument? That expertise is problematic? There's a large body of literature in science studies that says otherwise. But then you probably don't know much about that body of literature (& I kinda know some) so that makes me The Expert here 😉
