Ah the old "I checked with an expert" canard. Much like nutrition-chronic disease studies, for every expert in nutrition, there's an equal and opposite expert. Thread on the problems of expertise, because this (there's more upthread of tweet below, so read that too) 1/:https://twitter.com/GidMK/status/1203604334165909504 …

Replying to @ahhite
It's fascinating, because my initial tweet was prompted by vaccine denialism about Samoa, but LCHF people have all been jumping on to tell me that expertise is totally worthless Odd, that

I actually came on to suggest to Adele vaccination is what the thread was about. I think we all need to be careful to dig in a bit and find out the context. I suspect fewer would disagree if they knew the topic was anti-vax.pic.twitter.com/mSqfkYP1aX

Also, you'd be hard pressed to find "equal and opposite" experts and/or science in the vaccination issue. Which is, again, what interests me here.

Whose experts? Whose science? Plenty of people tossing fake news accusations about vaccines claiming expertise, why do you trust the mainstream scientists above them?

Ah the old "mainstream" canard. The division of mainstream vs. fringe is also a rhetorical one. So, in nutrition, I'm talking about mainstream vs. mainstream. Who is/isn't "mainstream" now, Willett or Ioannidis? Katz or Allison?

I was referring to vaccine science there, but I do think it raises a good point - do you think every disagreement in nutrition is as big a divide as the recent row over meat?

I think any guidance that can be traced back the the (US) 1977 Dietary Goals/1980 DGA - except "maintain a healthy weight" & "eat a variety of foods" - qualifies. But animal-sourced foods vs. eat plants is by far the biggest bc of strong political/ideological roots attached.

Do they all qualify as mainstream vs mainstream? In the same way? I don't think that's true, at least not in the same way at all

Well, I'm glad you brought that up. Which one goes where then, and why? I'm not trying to put you on the spot - although it isn't a rhetorical question - but the public has to grapple with the same kind of sorting process.

Lol, not sure if I can go over every argument in nutrition since 1980 this morning unfortunately
