      65 dead from 4500 cases? A mortality rate higher than 1 in a 100 seems very high. Ping @GidMK https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/dec/07/samoa-measles-crisis-100-new-cases-as-anti-vaccination-activist-charged …

Yep, malnutrition bumps up mortality for measles. In an otherwise healthy population with excellent hospital cover (I.e. recent European outbreaks) the death rate is usually 0.1%

What? You’re not putting this down to malnutrition are you ?? It because too many young people weren’t vaccinated.pic.twitter.com/OYP40MzHA7

There were 4500 cases of measles and 65 people died. As an amateur 4500 sounds low in such a poorly vaccinated population and 65 sounds high from 4500 cases. Chill, none of this is antivaxx :) We're discussing the consequences not the cause.

Gid, there could be lots at play here? Poor recording of cases. 4500 out of 200k in 30% vax? Poor infant health. Poor healthcare.

Yeh probably a lot of things. I'm not that familiar with the specifics of the Samoan healthcare system, I imagine there are quite a few issues that have made the outbreak more deadly That being said no one has died in Tonga, which has a similar system but a high vaccination rate

Again, this is about consequences (1 in 100) not causes. We know why it got away in Samoa but why is that stat so out of whack?

I know that deficiencies can make measles more deadly, but apparently I may have been wrong that this is the cause in Samoa I'd guess it's mostly about lack of access to healthcare but hard to know for sure

And I bet that 4500 is too low too.

Well they're vaccinating now, so it might not spread much more, but yeh probably going to be more cases before the epidemic dies down 😕
