Ok friends...@B_A_Palmer and I are talking to the postgrad students about all the scary things that can happen when you don't approach your data and analysis like a professional. I would appreciate any links to examples we can use, and will share the slides after.

Here's a fun story: one of the first projects I worked on out of graduate school, someone came to be with very excited preliminary results. The main independent variable was a measure of "cumulative blood pressure" where they simply added up all of the values for each patient.

I looked at the data, asked them how many blood pressure measures each person had, then asked why the axis went up to, like 100,000 or whatever it was. Reader, they had forgotten to set the "9999" values to missing, and were analyzing as though they were actual values.

The lesson is a) look at your data and b) always, always look at BASIC DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS (like min and max) before you run off & start analyses.

I've seen exactly this but with 0s (for non 0 variables like BMI) at least twice. Done it myself too, such an easy mistake to make, the best reason to always get a fresh set of eyes on your data

9999, funny story. Yes, similar ‘oops’ moments can happen to anyone. Descriptive analysis is the Cinderella of stat. analysis. It competes w/ glam & fancy methods. But, it’s Descriptive that gives us ‘the feel of the data’,reality checks & the base for next analytical steps.
