Should the @UofT be promoting naturopathy (explicitly noting colonics, homeopathy, etc!) as a career choice? https://utsc.utoronto.ca/aacc/naturopathic-medicine-naturopathy … cc @uoftmedicine @CBCHealth In this age of health misinformation, we need publicly funded universities to embrace critical thinking, not bunk!pic.twitter.com/qxvnqW6XvR

Tim: this war on alt/comp therapies & trash talking a UofT is embarrassing; provocative but unintelligent. This is the 21st & the historic/present disgraces of allopathic med cannot be denied. Certainly by now we can stop the trash talk and embrace options & rights for patients.

We should learn from what drives people to alt med. I've tried many diff alt med: acupuncture, naturopath, cupping, reflexology, crystal therapy, reiki, etc. Always a positive experience. Time, touching & attention. But that doesn't mean they work. Need good science everywhere.

I disagree Tim, science isn't needed absolutely everywhere; science sometimes smothers out humanity; there is room for more than what can be seen/felt/proven, there is room for humanity/spirituality/"care" - real "care" abounds in alt/comp therapies & is often lacking in main-med

CAM almost always framed, not as spiritual practices, but as something that works. Measurable. And increasingly, CAM practitioners use science-y language to legitimize (microbiome, stem cells, etc). See https://bmjopen.bmj.com/content/8/2/e019414 … Appropriate to critique using standards of science.

Agreed. We cannot always measure the proposed mechanism of magical healing methods, but we can measure if they have any affect on the people who use them! If there's no affect, it's not medicine of any kind

Ah! But the scientific method can't detect the effects because it's all individualised!

Actually, I should start getting screenshots of those arguments, because as soon as one says that the very next alt health person says there are many studies showing effects. Then I can simply play them off against each other. "But John said.........".

Wrong thread Stan. This thread has some people talking about improving health and healthcare. I think there are other threads on prestidigitation 👍🤓
