Australian veg has a high oil content. If the fire is hot, due to a high fuel load and strong dry winds, it can ignite veg ahead of it. This isn’t the worst fire in some respects.

True, but I'd wager it's the worst fire in terms of timing during the season. Usually you'd get this sort of massive burn towards the end of summer, no?

5 million hectares 1851. 2 million 1939. As I understand it, its mainly because of high winds. We had a 75% increase in wildfires in Wales last year.
