I think the Stanford Prison Experiment really speaks to the nature of scientific myths It was a useless study, mostly a commentary on society dressed up as research, debunked almost immediately, and yet people still reference it eagerly todayhttps://twitter.com/GidMK/status/1184631842974003200 …

My favorite thing about the SPE is that it was debunked ~almost immediately~ and yet still hailed as a massive breakthrough and still considered an important work today https://twitter.com/juliagalef/status/1184270907964944384 …

Science myths don't just appear, get proven wrong, and abruptly disappear Instead they make their way into our cultural consciousness and never really leave

Just look at the vaccine/autism myth It's based on a trash study done by a proven fraud, debunked by endless rigorous research, and yet I still semi-regularly get asked by friends if I think it's true

Or the artificial sweetener/cancer scare I've been told to be wary of cancer and Diet Coke as recently as last year, even though the supposed link was disproven back in the 80s!

I write my blog, record my podcast, primarily to correct misconceptions that are usually based on misunderstanding a piece of research, but it's one drop in an ocean of bullshit

Which brings us back to the Stanford Prison Experiment It's been totally, roundly discredited The conclusions are almost certainly more about how rich people at Stanford think prisons work than anything else And yet

I might still write a blog about it. I'm thinking of doing so Because every time I write about something that's been done to death, or roundly debunked, I get emails and comments telling me that this is the first time people are hearing about it
