The basic idea is that nutrition science is very complex and it's really hard to know if red meat is good or bad for your healthpic.twitter.com/35bXpmKnRr

Also, systematic reviews are the peak of evidence but even they can be biased so it can sometimes be a case of buyer beware!

The recent news seems to centre around a single argument - whether we have ENOUGH (or good enough) evidence to conclude anything at all about red meat

However, there are things that NO ONE IS SAYING - red meat is good for you - red meat is definitely not harmful

There may not be enough evidence to conclude that red meat is probably harmful - although that's disputed - but it's a very subtle point so read the blog because I can't explain it all in tweets

I was an academic pathology Reg in the uk researching bowel cancer. Our prof was adamant red meat is causal for colon cancer and from the evidence I looked at I was highly inclined to agree. Lots of pathological evidence.

I reckon that's part of the complexity - plausible biological pathways, but the epidemiology and experimental evidence is very muddled. Then you've got the argument over whether the effects are negligible or meaningful...

I honestly haven’t looked at the épi evidence for this but the pathological evidence is growing and present..... like anything it won’t be as simple as eat red meat get bowel cancer. Microbiome implicated.
