JV, it's a nice idea. But we are lumped into "factions" whether we want to be or not--& some folks appreciate being able to discuss a subject with people who are interested in the same topic. But others use these ready-made communities as marketing opportunities.

cant see anything wrong with discussing any topic with anyone still cant understand this argument “oh, but this guy also said this stupid thing, hence I struggle to reconcile keto” fabricating marketing opportunities is punishable by removing the mic, I hope

The problem is that it is more than just this one guy saying this stupid thing. Its more systemic & enmeshed than that. I think it will take willingness of LCHF community to self-regulate, critique, & challenge itself on internal bias, to minimize hyperbole & ⬆️ research.

It's far more than one guy. Many of the biggest names in the low-carb space promote unevidenced nonsense like slimming teas or magical supplements. There's also a vein of anti-vaccine sentiment from some

I think it's a relatively natural consequence of being against the mainstream - if you're already arguing that mainstream advice is wrong about LCHF, easy to add vaccines, supplements, etc to that ideology as well

Of course the issue of ideology, commercialism & tribalism isn't limited to the "LCHF community." (And yes, there is such a thing, as I will explain.) Yes, if textbooks and guidelines reflected available data, there might not be any need for a LCHF community. But ... https://twitter.com/janvyjidak/status/1176385616331907072 …

Somewhat, but honestly I think it runs a lot deeper than that. LCHF is being incorporated into many guidelines (Australian Diabetes Association for example), but I doubt the fantastical claims are going away any time soon

From what I can see, when LCHF becomes incorporated as an option in mainstream practice, the main reaction from the 'community' is to argue that it should be the ONLY option so mainstream is still wrong

Even though it’s in the guidelines it is still very early for adoption & lots of resistance/lack of knowledge among HCPs. I think this fuels some of the hyperbole which fuels more resistance.

I might be in a particularly welcoming space, but I personally haven't seen any resistance at all among the diabetes clinicians I work with when LCHF is presented as one option. Maybe not reflective of the majority though

Perhaps an international survey of attitudes toward LCHF among primary health care doctors, dietitians, and diabetes educators would be useful... then repeat it in 3 yrs

Would definitely be interesting. Add a knowledge survey of LCHF onto it and you'd have a really informative piece of research I think

Your space is particularly welcoming. I presented this week on carbohydrate restriction for T2D to a family practice: MDs, nurses, CDEs in attendance. Even showed @DianaMIsaacs slides from AADE. All interested. All reluctant to proceed as @DiabetesCanada does not formally endorse

This is a huge issue. We have LCHF/KD as an option (mostly for obesity and/or T2D) in clinical guidelines in several countries now. HCPs in other countries generally feel they are doing something wrong if they offer LCHF/KD. They shouldnt. Medicine/nutrition has no borders.
